Worker dies in Singapore yard blaze

A BLAZE on supply vessel under repair at Kreuz Shipbuilding in Singapore left one dead and 14 injured.

A flash fire broke out on the bridge of the Belize-registered supply vessel, Rainbow Star, yesterday, resulting in the death of one worker and injuring 14 other workers and crew members.

The vessel had been under repair at Kreuz Shipbuilding & Engineering, a subsidiary of Singapore-listed offshore supply vessel owner and operator Swiber Holdings.

According to a local TV report five workers suffered severe burns, with three in intensive care. The worker who was fatally injured suffered burns to 90% of his body and died in hospital this morning.

The remaining nine workers were treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes by firefighters, causing damage to the bridge and the accommodation level below.

It was reported that painting work was being carried out at the time of the incident.

The incident is under investigation by the authorities. In 2006 Singapore tightened its workplace safety and health regulations, including harsher penalities for employers where negligence is found.
