Scandlines cuts

Baltic ferry owner Scandlines is pulling its ro-ro service from Denmark to Klaipeda in Lithuania due to falling demand and rising costs.

It said the run from Arhus via Aabenraa had become an established part of the network. But it added: “Unfortunately, though, the developments in cargo volumes resulting from a considerable decline in demand and a fall in market prices are not sufficient to ensure sustainable economic growth for the route.”

There had been “drastic cost increases” and the financial crisis in Europe has meant that it cannot foresee improvements on the line.

“Furthermore, intensive endeavours by all those responsible at Scandlines have been unable to identify any economically feasible long-term concept for the future of the service on account of the current developments,” it said.

Sailings will stop by mid-December at the lastest.
